CBP officers seize fentanyl hidden in electric moped at San Ysidro Port of Entry

Seized narcotics have estimated street value of $232,032

SAN DIEGO - On Aug. 3, CBP officers referred a 22-year-old male Mexican national driving a 2024 Revoo electric moped for a secondary inspection after he applied for admission into the United States.

During secondary inspection, a nonintrusive imaging system revealed anomalies underneath the rear of the moped, and a CBP canine alerted officers to the area. A physical inspection uncovered seven packages containing 16.53 pounds of white fentanyl powder, with an estimated street value of $238,032.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the San Ysidro Port of Entry seized more than 16 pounds of fentanyl concealed inside an electric moped.

“Smugglers are employing innovative tactics to smuggle lethal drugs into the country,” said San Ysidro Port Director Mariza Marin. “Despite these challenges, officers remain vigilant while effectively utilizing their training, canine resources, and nonintrusive technology to thwart these smuggling attempts.”

CBP officers seized the narcotics, the moped, a GPS tracker and a cellphone. Officers arrested the driver, who faces federal prosecution for narcotics importation.
